Services that care for our people should be run by the people
In October 2022, Whitehorse Council secretly decided to exit in-home aged care services, including programs like Meals on Wheels. This decision has sparked significant concern and outrage within the elderly in our community who rely on these services.
With the council's decision not being made in public, there is no explanation recorded in the official council minutes. This lack of transparency is deeply concerning and goes against the principles of good governance. Residents were kept entirely in the dark until after the decision was finalised.
Elderly Whitehorse residents only learned of this decision when they received a letter from the council, informing them of the change. The abruptness and secrecy of this announcement left many feeling blindsided and betrayed. Programs like Meals on Wheels are lifelines for many elderly residents, providing not just nourishment but also essential social interaction and support.
The abrupt manner in which this decision was made, without community consultation or transparency, raises serious questions about the council’s commitment to the well-being of its elderly residents.
As a community, we must demand better. Transparency, accountability, and genuine community engagement are essential in making decisions that significantly impact the lives of residents. We must advocate for the rights and needs of our elderly population and ensure that their voices are heard and respected.
